On September 26th, 1963, the Chevelle was introduced. It was offered in everything from 2 door sport coupes to 4 door wagons. In mid 64 Chevy swapped out the 283cid to a 327 that brought it up to 300 horsepower and threw the Chevelle into the ring as a fierce competitor as a performance car. In 1965 they bumped the horsepower up again and officially marked the start of the muscle car era. The 1970s brought in new styling and better engine packages. This was also the first year the SS got the iconic twin racing stripes.
